17 years ago today, I woke up in a 22-story Marriott hotel right between the twin towers in NY. I had planned to linger till around 10 a.m. But a last-minute meeting made me leave at 8:15, 30 mins before the first plane struck. The hotel was destroyed. I was saved. #NeverForget

Obviously, while I had an angel on my shoulder that day, my story is nothing compared to the victims, rescuers, and troops who died or were injured at the site or in the wars that followed. Or even the traumatized survivors. God bless them all.

1/ Read this from @LaurenGoode, a fine, veteran reporter. She goes on to say that she’s *not* ready to conclude that her device(s) were listening in on her. But these “coincidences” are being reported more and more often. I hope some journalists are digging into them.
2/ We already know that the ad-targeting industry has no real scruples. We know that our phones and laptops and tablets have mics and cameras. And mics and cameras are now being installed all over many homes in “smart” devices. Lots of money could potentially be made by spying.
3/ I have zero proof of such spying. But if a thorough investigation showed that any ad or ad-tech companies were hijacking the mics or cameras on consumers’ devices, the backlash would be enormous. (Note: These views are all mine, not Lauren‘s.)

This is so wrong. Facebook, Google and others simply appropriate highly detailed, highly personal information about us without any action that could reasonably be called notice or permission. We need a federal law requiring that they ask first and offer to pay for it if need be.
And don’t be confused by the argument that you’re getting a “free” service in exchange for watching ads, like old-style TV or print. That would be a fair deal. It’s the secretive profiling, all over the Web, that must be banned. User permission & compensation should be required.
In other words, your private information should be viewed as private property, which you can sell, rent, or give away, if asked. In the U.S., we have 200 years of legal precedents on private property. Your data should be covered by those precedents.

1/ Some personal news: I've decided to quit Facebook around the end of the year. I am doing this - after being on Facebook for nearly 12 years - because my own values and the policies and actions of Facebook have diverged to the point where I’m no longer comfortable there.
2/ I am also quitting Facebook-owned Instagram and Messenger. I will remain on Twitter, and will continue to communicate via iMessage, email and SMS text with those who have my email address and/or phone number. Obviously, people who follow me here can also reach me via DM.
3/ I am hardly the first person to quit Facebook and I am not urging anyone else to do so, or trying to spark some dump-Facebook movement. Nor am I judging anyone who remains, or everyone who works there. This is just a personal decision about where online I wish to participate.

Last night when CPD rushed us for the last time. They literally had us surrounded in the parking lot. The BLACK women who were on the front was attacked first. These aren't organizers or activists. These were BLACK grandmothers, & aunts

Police shutdown the 24hr Walgreens. But everything else was open. This same area actually the same street several BLACK men/boys have lost their lives to CPD in since 2013. South Shore is tired.

4 years ago today I picked up my last paycheck from Trident, a firm of Raleigh & Southern Pines North Carolina, which went defunct in one afternoon instantly 4 years ago this month.
Trident made about $60 million dollars a year by the time I got there — 99% of that coming from selling DirecTV on a website called dx3.net
We bought dx3.net as a legacy domain — an old tech forum with a ton of backlinks, and stuck a new sales site on it and sold DirecTV subs, and for a few twilight years if you bought DirecTV there was a 20% chance you bought it from us.

Roughly three years ago today, I gave up on 30 years of writing. I literally clicked on the file that contained the first Lore stories and dragged it to my trash can. I remember the disappointment and defeat like it was yesterday.

I was done. The world had broken me.

Something stopped me, though. My intuition told me to step off the path that I thought was sacred, to walk in a different direction. I recorded an audio version of one of my stories, and shared it with a friend.

I took a risk. I had nothing to lose.

My brain fought me the entire way. This was the unknown, the unexplored. It was risky and brash and the dumbest “last 2 seconds of the game” play anyone could dream up. But my heart was beginning to believe, so I pushed forward.

I’d found hope where I hadn’t expected it.

1/ Seven years ago today, I woke up early, put on a suit and tie, and went to my classes at the University of Iowa. I had a speech to give later that night in Des Moines. I had no idea that it would change my life forever.
2/ I was nervous all day, struggling to focus, reviewing in my head over and over the words I had written the night before. After class, I got in my Pontiac Grand Am and drove to Des Moines as a light snow fell.
3/ The call for speakers had gone out a week earlier. Iowa Republicans had decided their top legislative priority was rolling back the unanimous Iowa Supreme Court ruling recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples like my parents.
