I grew up with Sesame Street in the 70s. I remember Snuffy being an imaginary friend. I remember Mr Hooper's death.
Berr and Ernie were never presented as gay. They were best friends with differences. They were the Odd Couple.

The culture punishes men who show any level of caring or affection for others by labeling them as "wrong" on some level. Caring is something women do, not men.

Frank Oz is not expressing himself well in his tweets. but his message is simple. He did not write them as gay, but their relationship transcends that. The important part is how they express their affection and friendship.
If you are INSISTING that Bert and Ernie MUST be gay because they are roommates that express healthy affection for one another, then you are feeding into the narrative of toxic masculinity.
I understand the need for representation, but you know what else would be awesome? If ALL men could freely express their emotion in a healthy way, and if examples of that weren't always immediately identified as non-hetero.
If Bert and Ernie are gay in your head canon, that is fine. But let the characters simply be what they are: best friends and total opposites who feel very affectionate for each other and are comfortable expressing it.
