Headed back from an always outstanding dinner with @DCNorg board. Brilliant fireside chat, now set to read through Senate Commerce written testimony from Google and friends.
OK, watched Senate consumer data protection hearing traveling home. I'll try to capture a few clips here. Biggest observation, California and Facebook's mess have completely shifted big platform perspective towards soft federal regulation to supersede CA. c-span.org/video/?451963-…
Apple and Charter understand decline in consumer trust happening over past years which impacts everyone. Apple is standing up as a leader. They won't directly point at Google and Facebook but clearly that's where the problems sit in terms of violating consumer expectations.
This clip is painful. Google outdoes Facebook and spews the line "We don't sell your data" twice in a row for effect. The fact they "rent" the data to nearly anyone who wants it but don't hand it over is the source of the duopoly's dominance. c-span.org/video/?c475145…
Love @senatortester's smart question how to simply opt-out of being tracked out of context. Love to tell him Google and friends fought exactly what the Senator seeks - a simple Do Not Track signal - after industry promised on White House steps to honor it. c-span.org/video/?c475149…
Google reports to @SenMikeLee about its extensive multi-year GDPR effort which is ironic considering Google's selfish, monopolistic refusal to share its plans until last minute, forcing publishers to get consent for them and offloading liability on them. c-span.org/video/?c475150…
watch Senate staffers in background give each other an "Atta-boy bump" after Google give canned line of "hundreds of years of human time." It's an empty line coming from Google since their biz model extracts rent from rest of industry based on the data. c-span.org/video/?c475151…
No Mister Google Chief Privacy Officer, the Senator is asking about how you track, mine and sell consumer's browsing and location history across your products and most everyone else's, they're not asking how to see what advertising you have showed them. c-span.org/video/?c475151…
