the ultimate question of the silicon valley experiment:

Does putting more money into the ecosystem lead to an expansion of high quality startups?

or

is the # of high quality startups hard capped (e.g. by a scarce resource such as exceptional founders)?

And presumably the soft cap hypothesis is the big bet @ycombinator is making (along with the flood of other early stage money)

you know what most people don't realize with outbound?

-the goal of the email is to get a 10-min call
-the goal of the call is to get a 20-min mtg
-the goal of the mtg is to get the "sale"

ONE ask per step.

Ask gets bigger each step.

Reel them in.
too many try to put it all in the first email. wrong. email ignored.

instead:

"Here's 3 <VERY TAILORED> reasons why you should listen to me.

Can we speak for 10 minutes max on the phone?"

(and... ^ double space between reasons + ask is key :)
btw-- This is basically Cialdini's "Consistency" -- but in everyday life.

but here, it’s just “YCS14” instead of “Harvard 08”
these biases, like halo effect, are human bugs.

can’t overcome with with pure intentions.
there was an old thread where a smart dude was asking @pmarca why only the top 20 VCs had great returns.

More research showing why the "privacy paradox" is a misnomer.

For those unfamiliar, the "privacy paradox" refers to the notion that people *say* they care about privacy, but then *act* in ways that are at odds with those stated preferences (e.g., sharing information online). 1/
The idea that people's intentions often don't match their actions is nothing new. This has been well-studied with regard to behavior change in psychology. For example, in Ajzen's "Theory of Planned Behavior"
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of…), perceptions of control moderate behavior. 2/
That is, people might *want* to behave a certain way, but if they don't believe they have control, often they will ultimately fail to act. This doesn't mean their intentions weren't true. 3/

Thread: how to do B2B event marketing properly, based on a decade of doing this stuff.

First, know that 99% of what event organizers try to sell you is utterly useless.

It’s incredibly easy to waste insane amounts of money and end up with nothing to show for it.
Let’s start with trade show floors:

Often traffic is low, particularly if a conference is content-driven (as most good ones are).

Most people walking the floor are just looking for free swag.

If you need to sell to an enterprise CIO, you’ll never meet them here.
And to make your booth stand out, you usually need to splash an obscene amount of cash.

You need to score a good spot (corner/in a high traffic area), have a beautifully designed booth, invest in lighting, and staff it around the clock with great sales people.

3/ Let’s start with VCs. Initially wary of angels as competitors, they realized that letting angels take the initial bets actually helps reduce risk, letting them focus their own bets. Win.

It's #NBERday! I haven't done it in a few weeks because the NBER release lists have been short, and only a few papers really got me jazzed.
Let's start with the most interesting and compelling paper in the lot for me:

Q: Does lead impact fertility?

A: YES. More lead, les babies. Moderate reductions in lead exposure have demographically-significant fertility impacts. #NBERday nber.org/papers/w24607
This is in line with e.g. Flint's experience, where intense lead exposure created a sudden baby-bust. It's in line with medical research as well. The study design... is making the best of limited data that it can. #NBERday
