Absolutely convinced over the last few months that Facebook is more than just a bad social network, it's actually a downright unethical company that will exploit anyone for profit. I was at an advertising conference in 2011 where a facebook higher up was talking about how they..
were pivoting the network to work for advertisers, it was obvious then that they were looking at making money off of selling their then customers (FB users) most of the room didn't seem to mind, but I was a college kid who spent most my life on FB at the time and was quite
Shocked by the whole thing. But I just rationalised that ya they got to make a living as well, how bad can it really get. Then there was their attempt to kill net neutrality in India, Zuckerberg acted like he was trying to get free net to millions of people, went as far as to..
Criticize the Indian citizens who pressurised the courts against it. Facebook maintains this holier than thou stance of caring about connecting the world, but their attempt in India would have meant that millions would only be able to access the internet through Facebook..
A rather convenient harvesting of a sizeable part of India, only the world's second largest population. After what we've seen over the last two years with CA and the sheer abuse of our data to frame our content in a manner that influences our decision making...
Imagine what it would have been like if our courts hadn't shut down Facebook's attempt to kill net neutrality, it would've further divided an already tough to unite country.
With an election coming up and WhatsApp already running riot in India, it's important we find ways to limit how we use their services. We need to be proactive in stepping out of our echo chambers (the irony of this being on twitter isn't lost on me)
If the govts of the world can't/refuse to hold Facebook accountable, it doesn't mean that we, the used and users of Facebook can't do something about it. It really is time to cancel FB if you can afford to.
Disclaimer: I'm not a journalist, I'm just ranting, annoyed and concerned. There are a crazy number of articles from credible sources that I have retweeted for months now, if you want more info on what FB has been doing it's all available and those RTs are an easy place to start.
