I'm so angry after reading this. Our profession keeps self-immolating by driving some of its most interesting and talented practitioners out, as we've done for decades. All because man-babies are threatened by intelligent, accomplished women.

As a male historian, I know I can and should do more to fight sexism and misogyny in our field, and in academe. We all have to, because it is intolerable that some of the people who are doing *great* work, and who are *great* scholars and colleagues, are being treated like this
I hope this post challenges you, as it did me, to think very hard about what more you can do to fight this. Start by believing women, and continue by being an ally and a voice when needed. The whole time, don't be like the people in this article's cases.

Hi! I have to research, condense, and explain all the California ballot initiatives for my job. Here is a tweet-per-prop thread-guide (finance snips all from ballotpedia):
Prop 1: Borrow $4 billion to build more affordable housing.
DID YOU KNOW: By the state's estimate, we actually have a SURPLUS of housing affordable to high-income people, but massive shortages of housing for everyone else. (The market only tends to build for the top.)
P2: Allows the state to re-direct some $ earmarked for mental health services to housing for people with mental disorders
WHO'S WHERE: The official no argument comes from *one* local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Statewide NAMI *supports* it.

And like any examination of the unconscious you will see things on Twitter that fascinate you and things that disgust you. This is part of its attraction: the filters of discourse become permeable, allowing the unsayable to leak across.

Not sure I disagree with much here. But feels like 4 semi-separate issues are getting smooshed together:
1—Insider/access-driven model vs outsider/empirical(?) model
2—Horse-race vs. non-horse-race focus
3—Tone of coverage
4—Velocity of coverage (quick/incremental vs big-picture)
I think No. 3 has changed—the "savvy", Halperin-ish tone has gone out of style in U.S. political journalism. More important, journalists are asking questions about what neutrality really means and whether it's even desirable. But the other categories maybe haven't changed much?
Having access to good sources is still *highly* prestigious in White House coverage (though, maybe less so in election coverage). Horse race coverage is still really popular (trust me). And not sure if velocity has slowed down—a lot of quick-hit blog posts have become tweets.

1. Among those who pay attention to national politics, President Trump’s weakness is nothing new. Anyone who knows anything can see that his fury signifies nothing.
2. To his supporters, though, it was likely surprising to see him cave to bipartisan demands to end a sadist family-separation policy that confiscated babies from immigrant parents seeking political asylum.
3. The president fears nothing more than appearing weak. This is not (only) about ego. This is about utility.
