Oh my, conversational programming wasn't supposed to happen this fast - portal.reinvent.awsevents.com/connect/sessio… by @simalexan ... the impact of practices due to the serverless space (not just combining fin + dev) will become very large if this kicks off.
I am really quite stunned to see people experimenting with conversational programming already. Ok, it was a key future battleground but wow ... some are moving very fast.
I occasionally hear companies announcing they are kicking off a "DevOps" program and I can't but feel sympathy for them. 7 years from now, when they finally finish, they will be in a world of capital flow / conversational programming and well ... it's a bit sad really.

Me : University or commercial?
X : Is there a difference?
Me : In academia, people tend to do the research before they submit the proposal to do the research in order to fit in with some sort of scheduled research delivery process / gantt chart ...
... i.e. they spend the time "researching" actually doing research on something else which once completed is submitted as the next research proposal so they guarantee milestones of when it'll be delivered (as it is already done). It's all about hitting KPIs etc.
X : What about commercial research?
Me : Well, a lot isn't actual research in the sense of creating a new field. It's more applied research. So there tends to be less uncertainty. Other areas, well you just have to embrace the chaos. Of course, people still want Gantt charts.

.. but let us not sweat the little stuff like health, society, cohesion but focus on big things like staying in the EU. As we all know, the EC will save us. I can hear Juncker on the phone to May saying "you can't continue privatising the NHS, the EC is going to stop you". Lol.

X : Acquisitions.
Me : Hmmm, a bucketload of tech acquisitions around Kubernetes. Expect big juicy deals.
X : It's the future?
Me : No. Mostly cash rich past giants with no future being clueless.
X : No market for Kubernetes?
Me : Some very profitable niches. Savvy tech buyer will wait until hype dries up before swooping in for tasty acquisitions around 2021-2022. This year will mainly be the clueless with big chequebooks. Hoping some friends will make it big this year.
X : The market doesn't operate to make your friends rich.
Me : Are you sure? It has been doing a good job of it - Cloud, Big Data, Containers ... it's always the same.
X : So, where is the future?
Me : I thought you were interested in acquisitions? They are not the same.

Final session of my day: "Applying Principles of Chaos Engineering to Serverless" presented by @theburningmonk. It's a great chaotic bookend to my day after a start with "Breaking Containers." I'm interested to see what differences (if any) there are in the serverless world!

We're going down the analogy route this time - chaos testing is like a vaccine that inoculates against frailties in modern software. Not the first time I've heard the analogy but it's definitely my favorite!

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.

THREAD: A good practice is for each AWS Lambda function to do one thing rather than bundle all functionality into one function.

Why?
A quick answer is that the smaller the Lambda function, the faster it will load and the quicker it should run (depending on libraries etc), but that's very simplistic

I was thinking about tips for re:Invent that I have been seeing...and I think there are some that are good for any convention or conference you go to. So I am going to give some here. :)
1. Wash your hands a lot, have hand sanitizer in your backpack. Remember people are bringing germs from all over the world. You don't want to get sick!
2. Remember to keep a water bottle with you, the air is really dry.
