like, the first time I ever heard it was from the mouth of a gat or, or a lot of them, and now I see thousands of games with that tag. I just came across a game with a "PLEASE READ" note from the dev that starts out saying "this is a walking simulator"
i guess i'm curious how game devs feel about that. i've never seen any opinions on it, and i hate the idea that people might feel compelled to use this term to ward off the bastards so they won't pay attention long enough to focus their spittle-flecked shitman anger
I would not accept that term used on something I made. Several people have told me it's been 'reclaimed' but i wonder how prevalent that feeling actually is among creators, with the events of four years ago still being acutely felt.
I guess my question is, is anyone in creator circles talking about this? Or is it just a habit everyone has fallen into? Does anyone care, or is it just me?
Personally I hate the idea that the infant-terrorists won and now they get to see their insult adopted and their hateful phrase comfortably classifying everything so they get exactly the filter they wanted.
reclamation is complicated but the fact that the phrase is simply factually *wrong* is what upsets me. they are not walking simulators. that is fucking false. it isn't true. so applying it to your work is using specific words that denigrate its content.
and if we are gonna invoke the concept of reclamation here, i would point out that the /slurs/ that term usually applies to are a) words with much vaguer alternate definitions, if any and b) still only for the people who reclaimed them
i do not like this state of affairs, i do not like seeing this tag, and i don't have the cultural sway to start a larger conversation about it. so i guess that's the end of that discussion, but it's been bugging me for a long time and now it's off my chest.
