This is perhaps the most important thread about @GetOnGab you are going to read. Many have asked me why I have been defending a website I don't even use as much as I have. Those people don't get the big picture.
I have not made a decision to not use Gab for any reason. I have been busy with Facebook and Twitter and did not want to learn something new. But I know many people on Gab and, now, I certainly intend to spend some time on Gab. And it's for an important reason.
Until Saturday, the vast majority of the people screaming to have Gab banned from the Internet never heard of it. Now, with no first hand knowledge, they are convinced that it is an alt-right meeting place for Nazis. Why? Are Facebook and Twitter the home of murderers?
I mean both have had murders either pictured or live streamed on them and no one attempted to end them for it. After all, you cannot blame an entire company for the act of one person. You cannot and should not call every Muslim a terrorist if one commits a terrorist act right?
But somehow you are allowed to paint every user of Gab as a Nazi out to murder Jews. You won't find anyone more pro-Israel and pro-Jewish people than me. I wear it as a badge of honor. But I also wear being an American and believing in American ideals as a badge of honor.
Gab is something you never heard of. It is not "the same." It does not "conform" And as humans have done throughout history, when you find something new and foreign you want to destroy it. We all wanted to blame something for this tragedy and Gab became a convenient scapegoat.
I heard @JakeTapper and @BrianStelter, two people I respect more than most, refer to Gab as an alt-right website. It isn’t, and that label is damaging. We need to be more careful with our words. But it is even more than that.
To those cheering as Gab gets pulled for the Internet, gets banned from payment platforms and more, the same people who cheered for the banning of Alex Jones, I say this to you. Study history. There is a reason we fight for freedom of speech.
