Ending birthright citizenship is a distraction, but shows how warped the GOP view of America has become.

There are only 21 million naturalized citizens in the US, .06% of the pop. We’re almost all birthright citizens.

The GOP just wants to leave out the brown people. #BeAVoter
Goes without saying that Trump lied. Ending birthright citizenship is a clear violation of the 14th amendment, could not be achieved by exec order or by Congress.

To watch Republicans clamber all over themselves to back him up, just a lie to motivate racist voters. Astounding.

The Trump admin cut the advertising budget for the ACA by 90%.

FOIA obtained emails show this was knowingly designed to harm enrollment, and they repeatedly lied about that fact.

Dem House oversight puts an end to the sabotage. Remember what they did when they had the power.
On a call w/ reporters, in response to whether HHS had studied the efficacy of advertising, an official said, “We haven’t done a specific study related to the public awareness of the program.”

It was a lie. They had, & knew it would harm enrollment.

Now that Dems have won House oversight, she’s promoting enrollment. Oversight stops the sabotage.

1/THREAD:Here I will lay out why, as a matter of original public meaning, the text of the 14th Amendment does not compel the United States to hew to birthright citizenship (jus soli). This view is supported by the text of the citizenship clause, the structure of the 14th Am., and
2/the evident original intent of the drafter and ratifiers. And while precedent currently poses a bar, that precedent can be avoided because it does not address the pertinent text, and in any event is poorly reasoned and should be overturned.

salon.com/2018/10/30/tak… I’m surprised more people haven’t considered that one reason for Trump’s birthright obsession is that he is a birther who subscribes to the conspiracy theory that Obama faked his birth certificate to illegally obtain birthright citizenship.
And while he reluctantly conceded that Obama was born in the U.S. — though betting he doesn’t concede in his heart — either way, ending birthright citizenship would further delegitimize Obama’s presidency in conservative eyes.
Remember: If there’s anything more important to Trump than feeling powerful by making money by cheating the system, it’s delegitimizing Obama. I’m sure that’s a huge piece of this.

I’ll preface this brief rant on #birthright #citizenship by saying that, for personal, political and religious reasons, I do not identify as a Republican or a Democrat. I believe that as a Christian and pastor I must remain engaged — but not aligned.
Over the past decade, I have become increasingly selective about which issues I will weigh in on in a public forum. As a rule, I’ll avoid almost all discussions of electoral politics in the U.S. or in any of the other five countries in which I serve.
I do, however, feel completely free to discuss and debate policies and perspectives that affect orphaned and vulnerable kids, and I have praised — and criticized — politicians and pundits Democrat and Republican when they help or harm at-risk children.
