“We’ll go up to anywhere between 10-15,000 military personnel on top of Border Control, ICE, and everybody else at the border,” Trump said in remarks to reporters before departing WAS for a campaign rally in Florida. “Nobody’s coming in. We’re not allowing people to come in.”
I can see the political cartoons illustrating Trump's words now: A horde of soldiers in desert camo, weapons bristling, looming over a small cluster of frightened women and children. What will that look like to the rest of the world? Can anyone talk this loon off his ledge?

Just left Afghanistan with a bipartisan Congressional delegation I led and wanted to share a few raw and unedited thoughts on my first trip back since being deployed there in 2014-15.
While much has changed, too much remains the same in Afghanistan. It’s clear to me that the security situation has deteriorated even further since I was deployed there, and the Taliban has taken footholds in new parts of country since failed Obama strategy of drawdown 5 yrs ago.
After visiting troops and leaders on the ground in Afghanistan, I'm convinced our efforts there are as important as ever, as the level of threats has evolved in recent months, but after 17 years the American people are growing even more weary.

I just got back from the world's largest pilgrimage you've probably never heard of: Arbaeen, which happens in Iraq every year.

Here's some pictures from Arbaeen this year in Karbala, which saw 20 million pilgrims - 10 times as much as Hajj to Mecca! #Iraq
To mark Arbaeen, pilgrims from all over the world walk 100 kilometres between the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, ending at the shrine of Imam Hussein.

In his memory, the entire way, the ENTIRE route is full of thousands of Iraqis passing out free food and drink everywhere!
You walk for days on end, sleeping in homes and husseiniyas that Iraqis open up to pilgrims, living off the generosity of the millions of Iraqis who spend all year saving to welcome you for the pilgrimage.

"Welcome pilgrims! Please take lunch!" These kids yell along the route.

In Dec. 1950, U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur requested that the authority for the use of tactical nuclear weapons be handed to him as battlefield commander. All indicators are he planned to use them in areas of North Korea and Red China. Truman refused and fired him in April 1951.
(It's not entirely clear what MacArthur proposed to hit with nuclear weapons in Korea and China: he did at some point publicly deny he ever intended their use. Other documents suggest he wanted to create a line of nuclear fallout to sever the Korean Peninsula from China.)
What MacArthur had got right, strategically, which Truman and the State Department had not, was that Communist China was not simply a satellite of the Soviet Union but its own entity, and an American attack on the Peking regime was not akin to an attack on the Soviets.
