In Malabon, a strange statue spooks residents especially during All Saints Day - a devil trampling on the archangel Michael inside a cage at a public cemetery in Barangay Tugatog, above the tomb of Don Simeon Bernardo (1869-1934) @PhilippineStar
Its story is as strange as its look. It is said that the demon becomes alive and walks around at night. A bead of rosary was put around the devil's arms, as if to dispel the evil in its being @PhilippineStar
This eerie statue was built in 1926 by Don Simeon Bernardo (1869-1934), a wealthy landowner in Malabon who was arrested during the outbreak of the 1896 Revolution for being part of the revolt, an accusation he would later deny in a written account of his life.
Acording to lawyer Martin Pison.
his great grandfather had the statue built as a reminder that evil prevailed over the good.Don Bernardo's anti-friar stance was brought about by his bitter experience with the Spaniards when he was incarcerated, tortured on charges he has denied
Don Bernardo was arrested with 300 others, tortured with scalding oil on his leg upon the orders of the friars. A guardia civil put a gun on his mouth to force him to confess. He was forced to defecate on the same pail used for drinking during their exile to the Carolinas
The statue had not always looked that way.In a photo published at the October 27, 1928 issue of the Philippines Free Press, there is no statue of the archangel Instead, the devil towered over a bas relief of Adam and Eve. The same bas relief survives up to now
The statue is described as the "Philippines' strangest monument" with "wings painted red, the body black." According to the magazine, Don Bernardo had the state built over a grave because Satan himself represents death. @PhilippineStar
"The statue was erected on the strength of the story of man's downfall," the Philippines Free Press magazine read.
"Bernardo concludes that as Satan is the cause of death, he should be represented in statues over the tombs of the dead." @PhilippineStar
Placed beside the statue is a plaque printed on which is an exchange between the devil and the angel, written by Tagalog novelist Lope K. Santos. In the exchange, Lucifer declared himself "king" on earth who taught human race of vices they enjoy @PhilippineStar
The statue was replaced with the current one and placed in a cage sometime in 1970 to protect it from stones being thrown at it, and from drug users using the tomb for pot sessions, according to another kin Lubis Bernardo. @PhilippineStar
It is said that the devil and angel will only change places if good has prevailed over evil. @PhilippineStar
