To any young followers for whom this is the first election you can vote in: You're probably hearing a lot of people telling you that voting is the most important thing you can do and that any apathy you feel around it is ruining the country.

I'm recommending you ignore them.

Voting is like sex: Simultaneously one of the most important things in life, but also kind of not that big of a deal.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by how many ballot measures you don't understand and how few politicians you know anything about and your underpaid Civics teacher's explanation of the Electoral College was more confusing than helpful...

Don't sweat it.

While it is certainly better to be an informed voter than an uninformed one, political engagement is a lifelong process. I didn't start engaging with politics to a meaningful degree til I was almost thirty. There's still tons I don't understand.

During the Massachusetts primaries a couple months ago, I spent an afternoon researching a handful of people up for election, made up my mind about the positions I felt were most important, and left the rest of my ballot blank.

That's pretty normal.

It's frankly unreasonable for us to expect a 19-year-old to know much more about an election than who they want for President and maybe some Senators and Representatives.

You have your whole life to build on that.

You do, however, probably have some core values, enough to know whether or not the shit coming out of our President's mouth is shit you want to push back against.

And you probably know enough to know the best way to fight him is to take back Congress.

Our rapist President put a rapist on the Supreme Court, but both President and Judge can be impeached. I can't say whether they will be, but the only way they can be is if Democrats control Congress.

The situation is complicated, and if you have the bandwidth to research all the other shit on the ballot, go for it!

But don't let a lack of awareness about that other shit overwhelm you, and don't let people shame you for not knowing it.

Y'all aren't that long out of high school. You are probably aware of how hard it is to be your age right now, but you will realize JUST HOW HARD it is to be your age once you're a bit older.

It's fucking nonsense.

So: I'm not gonna pressure you to vote, because pressure doesn't make this better for anyone.

But I'm going to ask you to. It doesn't have to be an All-Important task, but it's worth doing.
