This article caught my attention as it has to do with the current state of money laundering in the Netherlands. Apparently the yearly total is now 16 billion in the Netherlands

trouw.nl/samenleving/no…
So, given the amount of articles and items featuring Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies and money laundering, I decided to have a look at the report on which this article was based. It can be found here:

wodc.nl/onderzoeksdata…
The report only features cryptocurrencies TWICE!

Once from a study from 2014, erroneously saying they are anonymous: repository.law.indiana.edu/ilj/vol89/iss1…

Once from a 2018 study by Melvin R.J. Soudijn: researchgate.net/publication/32…
The most recent study is interesting. Searching the document for "crypto", we find such gems as: "The last CPA also mentions that most bitcoins transactions feature relatively small sums"
"Even with the advent of digital opportunities and crypto currencies, ‘cash is still king’"
Those last two quotes come from reports from 2016 and 2015 respectively, so things may have changed, of course.
I think, however, it's relatively safe to say that in the grand scheme of money laundering, cryptos an Bitcoin several magnitudes smaller than articles lead the public to believe. Cash is king, and with good reason: it's easier.
I highly recommend doing such skimming and then deeper reading of primary sources if you come across articles on these topics. It's good practice and enlightening.
All this at no point says that money laundering of criminal money is a good thing. My point is biased and easy writing of sensationalist articles is a bad thing, instead. My arrow is aimed at the cheap writer who is willing to score points without doing such simple homework.
This search took me all of 30 minutes. if I can do it with just Google and a place to start, any writer can.
