Had an encounter with a short con grifter this afternoon. A really skilled one. An experience I treasure every time it happens. It’s a beautiful craft to watch someone ply.
I can't quite tell the whole story here, for reasons that will remain mysterious, but she was a sales clerk, and her flim-flam was layered and sophisticated. I only barely caught it, at the last possible moment.
And no, I really can't say any more than that, except this: The scam itself was completely pedestrian. It was her skill at gulling you into missing what was right in front of your face that made it a thing of beauty.
She was a true confidence artist, one of the best I've ever seen in real life.
