James Meredith served the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1960. In '61 he applied to attend Ole Miss. Terrorists erupted in a race riot when he enrolled, killing two, & stoning fed marshals. It took 500 marshals & a National Guard unit to assure relative safety.
In 1966 Meredith's "March Against Fear" took him solo, from Memphis destined for Jackson. On June 7 he was shot by a terrorist hidden in the bushes along the highway
