40 years ago today, San Francisco Board Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Board Supervisor Dan White. Milk was one of the first openly gay people elected to office in the United States.
Milk spent his brief time on the Board of Supervisors fighting for civil rights and for his constituents. Most notably, he fought against the Briggs Initiative, which would have made firing gay and LGBTQ+ supportive school employees mandatory.
To quote one of Milk's closest friends, Cleve Jones, "We must always remember the man behind the legend -- the man who was neither genius nor saint, the man who was not our movement's first martyr." theguardian.com/world/2018/nov…
