X : You seem to think CEOs are stupid.
Me : Hell no. I do think most CEOs have poor situational awareness relying on epic stories like the Vikings of old for navigation. That's not a sign of stupidity, it's a sign of what common practice is.
X : Stories are a valid way of navigation.
Me : For directions to the local tea shop maybe, but not for organising the movement of 30,000 troops in a complex campaign. Ten minutes on World of Warcraft will teach you that even effective small teams use maps.
... stories also teach you a defined path and very little of the landscape / context. They're not much help when it comes to learning.
X : I don't see what World of Warcraft has go to do with leadership.
Me : I said this over ten years ago, I'll repeat it now. It's the most effective tool I know for teaching the basics. Spend 3 months trying to build a guild of 500 raiders with nothing but your wits.
... these people don't work for you because you pay them, you have to find other ways to motivate, to organise, to create structure, to assist, to lead etc. It's not easy. Most fail, standing around in Ironforge going "please join my guild" etc.
