Today @jrf_uk launched our annual state of the nation report #UKPoverty 2018. Here are some of my reflections on what has been a busy few days.
It is crucial when we talk about poverty we recognise progress has been made in tackling child and pensioner poverty before. With the political will and concerted action we can ease the immense strain struggling to make ends meet has on people up and down our country.
The debate about poverty cannot be allowed to become detached from people’s real lives. Obsessive debates about measures only risks distracting us from what matters - protecting everyone in our society from harm.
It is shameful in-work poverty is rising faster than employment and that half a million more children are locked in poverty than five years ago. This threatens to restrict the ability of millions of people to achieve their full potential.
Similarly, the struggles facing some groups can go underreported - people with disabilities, single parents and BME groups in particular. The way our housing, social security and labour market systems are designed is disproportionately holding certain people back.
If we are serious about building an economy that works for everyone, our first step must be to make tackling poverty a top priority. Together w can #solveukpoverty
There is no shortage of individuals and organisations passionate about achieving social change. As we reach a crossroads with Brexit, now is the time we work together to help shape a future society where everyone can thrive, no matter who they are or where they live.
