@BBCWomansHour Interesting discussion this morning on the challenges facing headteachers facing the cuts to budgets and the pressure to provide for our children.
Cuts to staff numbers, learning support for children with special educational needs all a result of central government cuts.
@BBCWomansHour Are the producers and presenters of Woman’s Hour aware, that the U.K. is a monetary sovereign nation. The provision of public services, are never revenue constrained, they are only a question of the availability of the real resources, staff, equipment and facilities.
@BBCWomansHour The U.K. government can purchase anything that is for sale in £s in order to provision our public services. While taxes are important for generating demand for our currency and a range of other reasons. Central government does not use tax revenue to fund its spending.
@BBCWomansHour Central government spends our currency into existence, by crediting accounts, it’s not like a household or business. Its needs no income and never needs to borrow in order to finance its spending.
Modern Monetary Theory describes how our economy works today.
@BBCWomansHour Public services are being hollowed out by a government determined to stick to a narrative that Thatcher started, that ‘government has no money of its own’.
Yes it does, it’s public money not taxpayers money,it exists to meet public purpose obligations that are enshrined in law.
@BBCWomansHour The debate in the U.K. around the affordability of public services and the inequalities of income and wealth will only progress if conducted in the light of these operational realities.
Listening to the challenges facing frontline staff, are of course important.
@BBCWomansHour However, if we are to move the debate forward, perhaps Woman’s Hour would consider inviting one of several leading economists, @StephanieKelton @ptcherneva
@MazzucatoM
To discuss how our 21st century monetary system can be used to balance our economy and meet the needs of all.
@BBCWomansHour @StephanieKelton @ptcherneva @MazzucatoM
Leading MMT economist, Professor Stephanie Kelton is an adviser to policy makers and politicians in the USA including @Ocasio2018
She gave this take recently at the British Library, then again at the House of Lords.
@BBCWomansHour on MMT 🙏🏼
@BBCWomansHour @StephanieKelton @ptcherneva @MazzucatoM @Ocasio2018 Woman’s Hour is doing the government’s job, maybe inadvertently, by enabling the “let’s go private” agenda both for education and healthcare.
Schools and hospitals in crisis... means we need to resource them properly NOT support a two tier system based on wealth.
