Great afternoon of community football for our annual Helping Hand Cafe charity match between Bayside P-12 College students and the teaching staff/Tim Watts MP office/Qenos “All-Stars”.
This year, former Socceroos Captain, Steve Horvat from the @WesternMelbGrp A-League Bid team guest coached the All-Star team and steered them to a come from behind 3-2 victory!
The participants raised $1160 for Helping Hand’s invaluable work in the lead up to Christmas, and the kids at least, got to dream about what it would be like to be able to play for an A-League club based in our own community in Melbourne’s West!

Ok. A third thread updating where things are at on the #aabill...
Since my last thread, the government came back to the negotiating table in the PJCIS and agreed to a series of amendments to the bill designed to prevent the issuance of Technical Capability Notices that could undermine strong encryption.
These amendments have been intensely negotiated with the government in a process that has been far from ideal, which is why Labor also secured agreement to continue scrutiny of the Bill through the PJCIS into 2019 and via the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor.

I’ve refrained from commenting too much on the Government’s encryption proposals while the PJCIS did its work. But now that Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton have blown up the committee’s work on this Bill, it’s time for a 'thread'...
The Turnbull/Morrison government have managed this encryption bill with the same ineptitude that they managed their leadership spills. And now that they face a political crisis in the wake of the Victorian election catastrophe, they are piling desperation on top of incompetence.
The Morrison Government now claims that this bill must be passed before Christmas or, as Angus Taylor extraordinarily said this morning, we’ll be left "without any prospect of prosecution" of terrorists.

I was up early today to give a second year lecture on electromagnetism... I try to highlight historical scientists but one thing that bothers me is that most of the scientists we talk about in first/second year physics are men.
Scientists like Faraday, Gauss, Maxwell (some people I've talked about this term) did amazing work! And it's great to highlight where the equations come from, but I also want to make sure that female students can see themselves in physics, past present & future.
I think last year teaching electromagnetism the only female scientist I mentioned was Emmy Noether, an incredible theoretical physicist (though some would argue her work is too advanced for second year undergrads): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmy_Noet…

I recently talked with graduate students in a seminar on #teaching practices in #HigherEducation about how to design and teach a course when you are not an expert on all of the content--which is really what most teaching is. Here are the main takeaways for those interested. 1/
In my experience, there are four main mistakes that novices often make when designing and teaching a course for the first time.

First, they approach the task by venturing off on their own into the wilderness of literature on all of the topics they don't know well. 2/
In other words, they prepare for course design as if it is a qualifying exam, attempting to become experts on all of the topics that the course will/should/must cover. 3/

Curriculum structure &content.
Teacher skills, knowledge, attitudes & practices.
What about all these?
Those are the multiple factors that work together to determine the levels and differences in Students’ academic achievements or Learning Outcomes in all School Systems. They ALL MATTER.

As anyone can clearly see from the listed factors that “what students bring to school; ie their abilities and attitudes and those of their families, communities and peers all matter. What plenty research has found is that these matter BIG TIME.
