2/ Why we need you to do this: I was just at another news site. It had a full ad wrap, another leaderboard ad after that. Two in-content video ads, three pop-over video ads, those TERRIBLE Outbrain "around the internet" ads. Why? B/c the ad market is tanking.
3/ The ad market is tanking b/c, mostly, Facebook and Google have taken most of it. News orgs report the news, and take on the financial and moral responsibility of doing so, and they get most of the revenue.
4/ So for-profit news orgs have responded by massive cuts—there are 40% less journalists than a decade ago—and by jamming more and more ads on each page.
5/ @MotherJones has done the opposite. We still have some ads, but we got rid of Outbrain and Taboolah and those other services that put a bunch of fake news on real news sites. Ditto those tiny Google ad sense ads. And a bunch of other bad actors.
6/ We did that because we think they're unethical. And because we want to give readers a better experience. So we're doubling down on you, our readers, who provide most of our revenue.

8/ Things are so bad that you may have noticed that even for-profit, VC-funded news orgs are asking you to donate. And if you care about them, you should consider. However, we can also give you that sweet tax deduction :)
