Headlines full of liberal centrist demands on Corbyn to launch no confidence vote and call for 2nd referendum... if only liberal elite not spent two years trying to destroy him... Thread: 1/
/ ... when the business elite simultaneously declare themselves "terrified" of a Corbyn Govt yet urge him to bring down Tories, what's really going on? A struggle for agency...
/ There's no clear party representing the globalist ruling class in U.K. - Tories broken, Labour in hands of working class base, Libs irrelevant, SNP checked out of the motel...
/ So Labour has a tactical problem: its members *and voters* want 2nd ref and remain; its target voters might switch off if Labour leads fight for 2nd ref/remain ... and while it does nothing, the illusion of agency rests with May
/ Letting Cabinet self destruct and work its own way towards second referendum could work. In any case Labour should only launch NC vote if it has a chance of winning: gestures a luxury at this stage...
/ it's clear some MPs/ Shadow Cabinet are over-playing danger of right-backlash in favour of "get Brexit over with + move on"... classic impulse of what Lenin (yes Lenin) called "mere trade unionism"...
/ The task of a left party is to meet the political situation that exists: May's Brexit deal cant pass, space for renegotiation is slim; a political struggle is taking place inside all communities over what kind of country we want ...
/ Solution: only move no confidence if chance of winning; stop attacking the line of your own party, start making the case for a second referendum, get out into the constituencies and the media with a clear critique of May and the hard Brexit threat...
/ Finally - the only way to defeat the far right in Britain is to start speaking confidently and radically about the issues that drive people towards them: Labour has good policies on defence, policing and migration - put them front and centre
One more thing: the principled route to a Second Referendum is clear - parliament can't decide and May's government can't fall. That's why Labour conference overwhelmingly instructed leadership to "support" it, if no Electon
