This is a long one about #SilentSam especially if you're going to be on campus today supporting the students/faculty. It's about white supremacists we probably all know as native North Carolinians. We grew up with these people. #StrikeDownSam
Today, I reported the first person I actually know to Facebook because W.T.F. I unfriended this person a while ago because he was just not a person I cared to associate with any longer. I grew up with this person. I'm not exactly surprised but am disappointed, sad, and angry.
His is the second comment in the photo below.
Today Chapel Hill is having Winter Convocation. A Confederate group has been given permission to rally on campus at 2 PM in support of putting Silent Sam back up in it's original place. My "old friend" is a member of that group.
I just discovered this today as he popped up due to a couple of mutual friends. I looked at his profile out of curiosity. And saw him posting about the rally and multiple posts about the student/faculty efforts to remove the statue.
He claims, loudly, that he won't allow racist or sexist talk on his page. But he and his "friends" go on at length about the "Yankee commies trying to steal heritage" and how it's going to "take a fight to put them down."
And he has the nerve to ask for prayers on his quest to "defend the South".

I'm white, a born and raised Southerner. I am firmly against Silent Sam being put back on campus. Southern history isn't being erased. It's being held up and it's not a good look for white people.
That statue is not more important than the lives and safety of students. This "friend" and his cohorts are not losing a damn thing by it's removal. So, don't you dare ask for prayers when your intent is that black people lives (or anyone's for that matter) are less important...
than yours or some statue that was erected to glorify oppression. You're going to spend your time at Christmas shaking your fists at 20 year olds on a college campus YOU DIDN'T GO TO while you're surrounded & protected by cops in riot gear. Like a good Christian.
All the while, posting threats online about becoming violent and wishing MURDER on a group of people who were systematically enslaved and murdered by your ancestors. And so many of those who protest as allies are natives to NC.
The "outside agitators" and othering is a lie. It's easier for them to say that it isn't fellow white Southerners telling them they're wrong and hateful because they don't want to believe it.
If you're going to be on campus supporting the students and faculty today, be careful. Because these people are delusional. They're racist. They're bitter. And they're dangerous. #StrikeDownSam
