It’s stories like this that explain why the headlines aren’t more desperate: businesses are dying quietly rather than risk the wrath of the public by being open about their troubles.

But eventually there will have to be a reckoning. All these changes will ultimately filter into
official figures, although because they’re lagging indicators we won’t know the full scale of the damage for several months.

Even though more and more firms are enacting contingency plans, the penny may only drop after Brexit Day, when the effects show up in the data.
And by then it’s too late. There’s no unkilling the golden goose once we have allowed it to sicken and die.
