The amount of gaslighting, false statements & misleading arguments emanating from the President’s Twitter feed this morning is quite something. Important to take note of that.
Claim: ISIS is merely a regional threat.
Reality: ISIS has inspired & directed terrorist attacks around the world. And Trump & his administration have repeatedly made clear they viewed ISIS as a global threat, hence the US-led global military coalition to defeat it.
Claim: Russia, Iran & Syria are “not happy about the US leaving”
Reality: Russia has said it is thrilled with the US decision. Trump’s own national security adviser said US forces served as a buffer to Iranian forces & proxies. Now that buffer has evaporated
And while the President argued yesterday that ISIS had been vanquished in Syria.
Today he acknowledges the reality that it has not been. And now says he’s simply leaving it up to US adversaries Russia, Iran & Syria to do so.
But he hasn’t just contradicted himself on Syria.
On the border wall, Trump is now suggesting less talk about the wall & more about the success of law enforcement in securing the border without one.
Literally 11 mins before that he said the wall is “necessary for border security”
Also FWIW, there are plenty of legitimate arguments to be made in favor of withdrawing US forces from Syria.
By the President has instead decided to rely on false & misleading statements, abdicating his responsibility to truly explain the rationale for his decision to the public.
