#Covid_19 and older patients: a thread.
A group of my friends asked me for advice on preparing for #coronavirus. I emailed them:
- You do not need to be scared for your kids.
- You DO need to be scared for the old people in your lives.
Everything we have learned so far is that the disease is far more dangerous to older adults than any other group.
Many illnesses present differently in older adults than in younger adults. While at this point, we don’t know specifics about COVID, common features of other respiratory illnesses are:

Last week, the mom of #Fatima, a 7-year-old girl in Mexico arrived 20 mins late to pick her up so the girl was left outside the school gates to wait. Over the weekend, her body was found. She was kidnapped, tortured and killed.

This is not normal, yet is the norm in Mexico.
Between 10 and 11 women are killed every day in the country... IN EVERY STATE of the country. Last year, the total of women and girls killed was 3,825.

#NiUnaMasNiUNaMenos #MexicoFeminicida
For weeks now, thousands have protested in my country demanding action from the authorities against the kidnappings, the disappearances, the killings of girls and women.

I not only follow the protests but every single case reported.

#SuicidePrevention: why I dislike the term, and what it often seems to come down to. How about instead we #Makelifeworthliving. Just some thoughts in a thread.
#SuicidePrevention feels like a negative designed to counteract another negative - that is, thwarting the wish to die. It's focus is to stop us from exerting control, in what may feel like the only meaningful way that is left when we've lost hope.
Removing access to 'means': a well-intentioned strategy, but what will it actually achieve? As for trying to reduce access or eliminate them all? Well.

THREAD. So I went to my local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) group meeting tonight. TWO things annoyed me. (1) We had to pledge allegiance to the medical model, implying participants must denounce any version of a social model or combined social-medical model. /1
(2) Reinforcing (1), the moderators jumped all over me when I mentioned a medication name. Apparently, there is an “unwritten rule” that people are not allowed to talk about any medications that they’re on by name. Only circumlocutions are allowed. /2
What was the reason given for (2)? Supposedly, “they” don’t want people to take questions back to their doctors about their medications or treatments, or heaven forbid to not take a medication. /3

1. What does the CFA designation have to do with surveillance capitalism?

Every year CFA charterholders must pay $275 or $45.4 m to the CFA Institute, even after the designation has been earned to fund a massive surveillance complex but with #ZKPs,...…
2. within cryptographic protocols, it is possible to enforce ethical behavior while maintaining privacy.

Furthermore, we were told that as long as we follow the Code of Conduction & Ethics, then the CFA Institute has no latitude to take action against CFA charterholders,...
3. who have worked at least four years to earn the coveted designation.

However, I’m afraid that surveillance capitalism has no ethics, just like with Facebook and your CFA dues are used to fund intimidation & censorship tactics as well.

1/ Dear #SocialJustice warrior,

You are #woke but you're not awake.

Since the beginning of time there have been those who seek to gain power or maintain power. This is a sad fact of life. There is truth to the #GameOfThrones
2/ For those of you who are #woke yet asleep-

There are those who powerless & become bitter.
There are those who are powerful & become greedy.
There are those who fight for the powerless & become caught in the powerful's web.
3/ You say you're #woke because you fight for #SocialJustice -causes that seem fair and equitable

-against inequality, rich vs. poor, white vs. black, male vs. female...

That sounds great.

Until the light filters beneath your lids & you begin to ask questions...

A thread on some quotes from @gautambhatia88’s “The transformative constitution “In equality jurisprudence, the approach of focusing on the disproportionately exclusionary impact if politics rather than their formal character or motive is known as disparate impact”
“It is based on the premise that inequality and discrimination result not (only) from individual hostile acts, but from structures and institutions.” @gautambhatia88 Only in brackets important & added by me.
An test for entry may be “neutral” but yet exclude by aligning with exclusionary institutions; if an physical entrance test for firefighter includes activities not necessary for fulfilling duties and unintentionally poses #gender-barriers, deserves to be struck down. #NoteToSelf

Delighted to be attending #NECE2019 joining colleagues across Europe to explore the role of #citizenshipeducation in confronting inequalities
Listening to @lokiscottishrap "I went to a school where we were taught to do what was necessary to get a job in a precarious economic environment, and to be grateful for it" #NECE2019
Now addressing Q about honesty. Is it more honest for educators to teach about wealth & inequality? Answering with insight: ppl from bottom of economic ladder are well versed in middle-class sensibilities due to contact with professionals. Middle classes struggle with that divide

I've been thinking a lot about #socialjustice lately and the role of education (schools, mainly) in addressing the work, tensions and struggles of justice. It's the topic of my PhD. In this thread I am going to share some initial thoughts on it /1
In my PhD I am asking whether #socialjustice requires what I am calling a 'socially just citizenry' i.e. an agential, structural, epistemic and emotional orientation towards social justice, and if so, how does education help or hinder the processes involved in creating it /2
I recognise that this is a big and intimidating question. It's a philosophical & theoretical study, so I'll be exploring ideas rather than empirically analysing or describing a particular event. But the aim is to keep it accessible, usable, relevant & real /3

We need three guarantees:
First, an adult community learning guarantee.
-An adult community learning centre in every town in the country.
-Top-slice the existing £60 million support fund for apprenticeships and use this to support more organisations like @WEAadulted.
Second, a part-time higher education guarantee:
-Reinstate tuition fee support for the most disadvantaged learners who do courses that are likely to command a return to the jobs market
-Demand that more of the £817 p/a that is spent on outreach is directed to part-time learning
Third, an employer guarantee:
-Restructure existing tax reliefs available to employers who invest in training, so that they receive a more generous relief when investing in low-skilled employees
-Introduce a #SocialJustice tax credit, expanding the number of employers who benefit

Just got my course feedback. My students hated my online classes They really wanted me on Blackboard, I wish they knew how much of their data got sucked up. More importantly I want them to understand why they need to #ownyourdata #digped
This is such an importance #literacies lesson, such an important skill for educators to model. We have to #teachtheweb just as much as any "Big Five" they are missing this take away. It is essential to our civil society
And I thought I really nailed the navigation. I removed a third party chat app, removed an annotation app, got it down to just two websites, theirs and mine

Updated #Democrats 2020 Pres. Primary Candidates & Delegates Map begun mid-Mar. Now 23 candidates. So many candidates from higher pledged del. states is attempt to dilute 1st round majority vote (50%+1), forcing 2nd rnd, bringing Automatic del (not so supers) back into play.
August 2018, @DNC voted (as a concession to #Progressives ) to remove not-so-super automatic delegates, but only for 1st rnd voting. A real reform would have removed them entirely - hence the flood of Dem. candidates - an end run around to concession.…
Since the 1982 Hunt Commission creation of not-so-super automatic delegates to prevent #Progressives from being elected, graphic ⬇️ shows how many candidates ran each election vs no. that withdrew before #DNC Convention.

Why the word "#diversity" is counterproductive to building equitable, fair organizations: a thread, a rant.

First: #language has both literal and contextual / socially constructed meaning. For our purposes, I'm talking about the socially constructed meaning of "diversity".
In last year's State of Diversity Report, we found that people overwhelmingly associated the word "diversity" with two groups: White women and Black Americans. Even outside the U.S.…
Literally, Aussies were more likely to say that African American people were "diverse" than Indigenous Australians.

Let me tell you something specific: BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT DIVERSE. Neither are women, Latinx folks, people with disabilities, etc.

The Industrial Age may have come and gone but vestiges of its culture is yet to leave a lot of us because of the indoctrination passed through generations to us.
Despite the changing sociopolitical landscape we have held on religiously to old beliefs to that the global connection. economy no longer rewards.

Racism is not just a set of discriminatory actions; racism (and racial capitalism) is hardwired into very #infrastructures of our daily lives, shaping who breezes through life with clean, potable water and who lives without ‘universal’ public services. A thread.
In the Annals of @theAAG, @shiloh_deitz and I explore domestic water provision in the USA and expose its racialized, classed, and political nature. Yep, we do the entire country. We run the @ipums numbers. We make the maps. We bring the facts.…
Myth: Public water service is 100% universal in the USA. Fact: Nearly 1.5 million occupied households the US lack complete plumbing (water + sewerage) in their homes. That’s equivalent to the nation’s fifth largest city. A city of the plumbing poor. #waterinsecurity

In the spirit of #SocialJustice I will be calling out @FirstBankngr by the end of day. We have tried dialogue & informed @cenbank of their gross negligence but they have refused to prioritize the case in question. We will be filing & going public @citizen_gavel #GrossNegligence
We have been on this case for 7months now. 👉🏽
The rate at which @FirstBankngr is hurting Nigerians is alarming and this unprofessionalism has to end now. Asides from illegal deductions and retention of millions of cutomer’s money without reversal, here is the worst of their gross negligence.

Little more than a week before January ends, and I’d really like to be at 1K followers. Here’s a little bit about me in a thread so you can make an informed decision about whether following our campaign for the US Senate to take the seat held by @KamalaHarris is worth your time;
1) I am for #MedicareforAll/#M4A. Here’s a pic of me in Sacramento, supporting the passage of #SB562 which would have guaranteed #healthcare coverage for all #California and provided universal healthcare. It is the moral choice, it saves us money and we support a nationwide plan.
I am for broadening the pathway to legal citizenship for all people interested in coming to #America and allowing us to prosper. I have marched with @UFWupdates @UFWF in the past and plan on doing so in the future. Rights of Mexican-Americans are my rights, porque somos familia.

Ooh baby let’s break some of this down. What affirmative action and diversity & inclusion programs (flawed as some were/are) reveal is the lie of American #meritocracy & #bootstrapism.
Affirmative action & diversity programs have repeatedly sought out women, people of color & increasingly queer & disabled people for opportunities for which they are qualified. These programs consider experiences of oppression an important perspective these folks bring.
Further, when these programs occur in early education settings smart, creative & otherwise talented marginalized kids get to have their interests & skills nurtured in ways their families may not be able to provide either financially or bc of lack of awareness of such programs.

Can we for real make #collectyourcousins a thing? Black folks are constantly collecting their cousins bc 1 black person acting a fool can have far reaching consequences for all of us. White folks don’t seem to feel as implicated by the failures or foolishness of other white folks
I propose #collectyourcousins as a call to allies to come respond to racist (sexist, cissexist, ableist, homophobic) comments by similarly identified people. White women collecting white women. Straight men collecting straight men. Cis folks collecting cis folks.
The appeal of #collectyourcousins in two-fold for me. 1: Privileged folks often respond defensively especially to marginalized folks calling them on such privilege or ignorance. They have a harder time being dismissive of folks with shared identities.
