Because those assholes writing the algorithms at Facebook aren’t going to take responsibility for their work for YEARS. they’re not going to give us the tools. We need to force them from the outside.
Ethics is moving, but it’s moving slow. People writing this code genuinely think “it’s just algorithms” absolves them from responsibility. NOPE.

People who work at these places - fb, twitter, palantir, uber, et al - are doing incredibly stupid things. But they’ve always been told they’re “smart” and they have no incentive to question the orthodoxy.
Our only chance to get internal info is if working at those places becomes so socially unacceptable (& financially unremunerative) that folks leave - and belatedly realize, with experience in the outside world, how stupid they were.
I put the chances of that happening - of us getting some kind of Deep Throat for Facebook - at 10k to 1. At best.
