Been trying to figure out why Iron Man 3 gets singled out so much as one of the worst Marvel movies when I think it's actually one of the best -- and I think it's because as much as people say they want something that doesn't adhere to the "Marvel formula", they really don't.
Even Thor Ragnarok, which on the surface feels like such an aside to the MCU is structurally just like all the other Marvel movies.
But on the script level, Iron Man 3 is the one movie that deviates the most from what every other Marvel movie does.

It's also the reason why I love it so unabashedly.
To me, Iron Man 3 is like special run of a comic series that a writer you love was allowed to make this singular, quirky story that was so unlike what you expected, and with time ends up becoming your favourite storyline.
I already loved Shane Black's modern neo-noir sensibilities and how he applies them to the action thriller, so for me it was peanut butter and chocolate coming together. It tasted every bit as amazing as I expected.
And maybe that's the difference. I suspect many people were thrown for a loop and never really quite got adjusted between what they expected from a Iron Man movie and what they got with Iron Man 3. I went in expecting Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with superheroes and got it.
