And PiS in Poland is popular in part also because it improved tax collection from corporations and increased family allowances. I am not suggesting that this excuses all else they (mostly Orban) do to curb media freedoms or independence of courts...(2/3)
I am saying that the Central Europeans have not gone suddenly crazy in voting for illiberals. They address economic grievances better than liberals; without breaking the budget. And that is where defense of liberalism has to begin, with better economic policies -as Munchau writes
