Feel free to shit on Black Mirror or Bandersnatch if you don't like them but CYOA films were on their way back in anyway with CtrlMovie/Kino and Paramount/20th CF and at least Brooker is a longtime enthusiastic and outspoken games fan/advocate for games as art vs gimmick man
Like I agree that marginalized devs are the backbone of a ton of game design, esp twine, but it's weird and disingenuous to paint Brooker as a new-to-games asshole when he played games before I was born lol and baffling to bring up gamergate which he repeatedly made fun of
Like Bandersnatch is mostly novel in it being accessible and being meta, it's not a huge leap forward in art, and it's very very CISHET WHITE DUDE, but you can criticize it without painting Brooker as some like casual thieving charlatan? You can dislike stuff without doing that
I was really disappointed in season 3 and pretty much quit watching so I'm not some huge Black Mirror advocate but Brooker is Undeniably a Games Man

honestly the most upsetting/embarrassing thing about his games stuff is, to me, the fact that Graham Linehan was interviewed in that doc lol. For a StrucciMovies throwback to one of my better early essays I uses a lot of Brooker in this

Good morning! Today's #TenThings post will focus on WORLDBUILDING. Now, keep in mind, this is 10 tweets, whereas I did a 7000+ word lecture on Worldbuilding for my old class at @LitReactor and teach it as a 3-hour workshop. So... it's gonna be sparse and incomplete! Still:
1. Worldbuilding happens on every page, even in contemporary stories. It's about what's relevant to your protagonist, how they specifically react to their world. It includes all the senses, the environment, the government, the culture. Your job is to show just the right amount.
2. If you need to start with an infodump, go ahead. Most beginning writers = their first chapter is all infodump, laying down the rules of the world. And that's ok. Write it, start the story, and when you've written the whole thing, DELETE THE EXCESS. Get it out of your system.

2/ As many of you know, I threw my back out while hand sewing. I never said what I was making.

Background: two years ago my son drew a monster that was so cute, I paid a large sum to a brilliant woman on Etsy to turn it into a stuffy. LOOK😍
3/ More recently my son outgrew some Hannah Anderson pajamas (also there were holes, so we couldn't donate them). We got the idea to "make them into something" for Daddy's Christmas. We would remember his childhood pajamas forever!

Without getting too spoilery... a post-credits scene shows the main character listening to a tape marked "Bandersnatch Demo", consisting of screechy electronic noise. Tape close-up:
Naturally, this has caused no end of confusion to Americans and millenials who have no idea about the connection between cassettes full of screechy noise and 1980s computer games.

#Bandersnatch is some good, goofy fun that gets less satisfying the longer you spend with it. The on-ramp was well designed, and CYOA style “early endings” + jump-backs worked surprisingly well IMO, but the mix of tired IF and traditional narrative clichés felt lazy.
(SPOILERS)
as many have said, the genius = madness trope is played out and dangerous, and in this case also a crutch that covers for incoherent narrative (a major character can be either dead or not-dead in a single branch, with no clear causality AFAICT)
Also, interactive fiction that declares “surprise! all choice is an illusion! that’s the point!” has been done many times before, and adding the meta layer of fictional auteur giving up and removing meaningful choice from the game doesn’t make it feel any fresher IMO
