This is typical of "The Intercept" that is hopelessly naive. I'm a never-Trump, pro-immigration person, and Trump's child-separation policy is tantamount to a warcrime. But this position is stupid.
We aren't talking about the child-separation policy at this point, but the thing that has been happening since late in the Obama administration when adults arrive at the border with children.
If you just give them a pass, because children, then you incentivize child trafficking, whereby any adult that wants to get into the country just buys a child.
So you are going to detain the illegally immigrating adult. And that means detaining the child as well -- not so much "imprisoning" the child so much as doing the best you can given you are detaining the accompanying adult.
Trump has some evil policies, but it's a difficult situation that isn't completely Trump's fault.
