i've mentioned this but i'm continually astonished at how microsoft broke the 30 year legacy of the windows API, which has worked since before I was born, with UWP which doesn't work.
UWP is fundamentally broken and the proof is that microsoft's own attempts to use it are pathetic failures. even the calculator is a piece of shit now. it's slow, it's clunky, keyboard input is flaky, drag and drop nonexistent
there was a time when you could assume that anything built into the OS itself was basically functional, even if boneheaded or inadequate. anyone who tells me windows or its builtin apps were buggy prior to win 8 gets blocked, i'm not here for that 90s brand war bullshit
win 9x itself was unstable but even then the builtin utilities were basically functional and worked how you'd expect.
no UWP apps work. there's something fundamentally wrong with the entire API. all of microsoft's own attempts to utilize it are completely broken and shockingly limited, and i accept no answer other than MS themselves will not admit the API is unusable
everything was more or less fine until UWP happened. you can tell, very clearly, that there has been an executive decision inside MS that everyone has to eat their own dogfood, and that everyone is finding that their own dogfood makes them sick
the windows builtin utilities were largely stagnant for years, but when they did make changes they were, if misguided, at least functional. something has changed, and now all new additions to windows are not functional.
UWP feels like nothing so much as electron. it's slow, unresponsive, ugly, clearly does not fit in any design language. you can tell the people using it are struggling. it has zero uptake by commercial developers.
i think the new control panel is written in UWP. i think that's why the old control panel still exists: because porting things to it is actually extremely hard, and their own devs ran up against a brick wall
