Just returned from a visit to Puerto Rico. This thread highlights culture and resistance to imperialism.
In old San Juan, the artist collective La Puerta painted this mural as a call to resist American colonialism, neoliberal economics and the imposition of crushing austerity measures. m.facebook.com/lapuertabander…

In Ponce, this mural commemorates “Those who weren’t counted” — the thousands of Puerto Ricans killed by Hurricane Maria whose deaths were excluded from the official toll.
This mural depicts “Ricanstruction” — how locals salvaged and rebuilt what they could in the wake of Hurricane Maria and the dismal American response
Trump’s paper towel-throwing stunt epitomizes American arrogance and indifference to the devastation Puerto Rico suffered. The moment lives in infamy in the streets and in literature.
How American capitalism robs Puerto Rico’s wealth and forces its people off the island and into precarious situations far from their homeland
The Museum of the Massacre (unfortunately closed when I visited) is the site where, in 1937, police shot dead 19 peaceful pro-independence demonstrators under orders from the U.S.-installed governor.
Was lucky to visit Bar El Familiar, where legendary salsero Hector Lavoe honed his skills for many years. The neighborhood is poor in wealth but rich in culture. Locals were warm and pleased to see foreigners.
The cemetery where Hector Lavoe is buried was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria and remains in disrepair because of lack of available funds.
“El Boun” lives next to the cemetery. He paints and repairs it, and on some nights, he sits on Lavoe’s grave to hang out and drink beer.
