It's like the UK is suffering some fast-moving terminal illness, but every time we go to the doctor we get shown scans and charts from months ago. They kinda-sorta tell the story, sure, but they don't tell us where we are NOW.
But the corollary of all that is, we will only realise we've reached full on brown trouser time long after the moment has in fact passed. And by then, it's not just too late - it's much too late...
So if the headlines are suddenly looking grim (and they are - keep up!) then reality is that much grimmer yet.
