This is one of the most idiotic talking points in the entire immigration debate. The issue is not the rate of additional crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants, who are 100% lawbreakers by definition. The issue is crimes that should not be happening AT ALL.
Many of the illegals who perpetrate these crimes are repeat offenders, and Democrat open-borders policy demonstrably interferes with efforts to catch and incarcerate or deport them.
The type of criminal activity involved is relevant as well. Some illegals become muscle for gangs and distribution manpower for drug networks. The manpower could be more of a southern border issue than the drugs themselves.
The stress placed upon law enforcement by the flood of illegals is a major problem. The rate of felony offenses is meaningless when the sheer number of people hitting the system makes it more difficult for police to protect citizens from both domestic and foreign criminals.
In other words, our law-enforcement system has enough problems domestically without importing more of them, a point the Left hammers in other contexts but gets very quiet about when illegal immigration is brought up.
We might also bring up the "if it saves just one life" standard employed by the Left for so many other issues. We're supposed to passively tolerate tens of thousands of crimes and murders because someone works up a study that the crime rate of the illegal population isn't high?
And those are easily PREVENTABLE crimes and murders. You don't have to rip up the Bill of Rights, as in left-wing gun control fantasies, to prevent those deaths and property damage. The government just has to do its job and secure the border.
We keep hearing about the supposedly lower rate of crime among illegal aliens from people who don't give a damn about the lower rate of crime among registered gun owners, concealed-carry permit holders, or NRA members. THOSE groups are reflexively denounced as monsters. /end
