Older people aged 65+ are seven times more likely than average to share news stories that are untrue (aka fake news) on Facebook.

So one would expect that falsehoods that stoked ingrained views would do particularly well when circulated amongst that group.
It reinforces the "they were lied to" narrative to some extent. But a lie only has an impact if people see it. And the lies were distributed, quite inadvertently, by millions of their peer group.

(I believe that sincerely: most people won't have been conscious that what they
were sharing was untrue. No malice was involved. They were just sharing "interesting stuff" they'd seen. But being more liable to sharing falsehoods, they'll have done the liars' dirty work all the same.)
