1. A judge has ordered a man who tortured his girlfriend’s cat to death in a case the Sheriff called "one of the most heinous acts of cruelty" he'd ever seen to do community service at an animal shelter: cincinnati.com/story/news/cri…
2. The cat was “hung by a rope and severely beaten, causing the death of the animal” to get back at the woman for breaking up with him. He should be in prison, not an animal shelter.
3. Can you imagine a judge ordering someone who “severely beat” their spouse to volunteer at a woman's shelter? Or a rapist to volunteer in a similar capacity? Or a convicted pedophile to volunteer at an orphanage? It's unthinkable.
4. And yet when it comes to defenseless animals, that is exactly what the Hon. J. Gregory Howard, the judge in this case, did: goo.gl/mb4bqW, what other judges have done: goo.gl/ISKb3Q, and what still others will do.
5. In fact, when I ran an animal shelter, I faced a similar situation where a court ordered a convicted abuser to volunteer with us. I simply refused to let him do so. And in a subsequent telephone call with the Judge, explained the reasons why.
6. I respectfully reminded the Court that as a non-party to the litigation, we could not be ordered to do so, and very respectfully suggested that in addition to time in the county jail, a total ban on contact with animals was more appropriate.
