Last go for the crib on #BaptismoftheLord... end of #Christmas season in the Western calendar. Back to green, #OrdinaryTime. But that’s still pretty extraordinary in itself... many cribs retain the #shepherds & add in the #Magi. Not sure what they all eat...nearly 3 weeks! 1/
You have to say, it gets pretty crowded & noisy in there...shepherds, lambs, pipes... the ox & ass aren’t #Trappists either... 2/
...and that’s not to mention the #Angels... We conflate 2 separate events a year apart. If #Epiphany had its own octave all would make more sense. It would give #OrdinaryTime 33 weeks too; which makes sense: a week for every year... 3/
#EpiphanyOctave would calm the crib... we had a quiet moment in church during takedown, without the crib visitors. I’m sure I heard Mary whisper to Joseph... “I thought they were never going...” 4/
But #babyJesus takes it all in his stride. He gets the best view in the house. #incarnation #Theotokos #ChristmasSeason. Next stop... #Egypt.. 5/ ends

#Christmas is a day of remembrance and strengthening family bonds. The border wall behind me cuts those bonds. It disintegrates families seeking inalienable dignity.

It is a monument to bigotry, a piece of physical xenophobia.
The picture is from my trip to Tijuana in August when I spent a few days advising asylum seekers. I am standing on the Mexican side, but technically inside the US.

Here, hope and despair run feverishly as two turbulent rivers, each vying for victory in these roaring rapids.
Tonight, entire families hunker down in a tent city not a hundred yards from where this picture was taken, their futures deliberately made cruelly uncertain, and still our government throws up more walls of bureaucracy designed to break the spirit under a huge "closed" sign.

I can't imagine how difficult the last month's been for the brave women who've spoken their #MeToo stories & the brave women for whom it's still hard to speak. This is a revolution and it's been a long time coming. But I've been perplexed by the reaction of us men. #Thread
It's been difficult navigating conversations with fellow men over the last month, particularly as someone who's been speaking up on #MeToo& who's known both survivors & (unfortunately) perpetrators, and has been deeply affected by that.
(This won't be preachy, please read ahead)
Yes, there are men who are empathetic and kind; then there are conversations that've revolved around 'Such is life', or 'What can one do'. But many (heated) conversations have alarmingly been about: 'But any man is a target today (#Notallmen)' & for others still, this is gossip.

So now watching “Dark Water”, the first part of the two-part eighth season finale.

Clara is a fascinating companion, in large part because she’s essentially riffing on the sense of entitlement that Rose felt.

“But I am owed better. I am owed.”

Clara is selfish and self-centred. But she’s aware of that, and the show is aware of that.

These traits are explored as developed. They make her human.

The existing world order is inherently unjust, inhumane & unsustainable, but everyone who is anyone in society, with any wealth, power or influence has a massive personal self-interest in preserving the status quo . .
. . . pretty much as it is. In fact, in a democracy like the UK, we ALL do, because the system is based patronage, with the government of our mercenary "patron state" striving to satisfy the demands of its countless clients, individual & corporate, & very unequal.
Consumer capitalism is premised on the misconceived idea that if everyone pursues their own self-interests this will ultimately serve the interest of society at large. It's a rationalisation of the status quo by society's wealthy & academic elites whom it serves very well.
