This reaction is the product of an unquiet conscience.
Gillette suggested as men we should do better than to excuse bad behavior.

Any man who sees that rather obvious statement as an attack on their identity is telling us something about themselves.
And using those killed in WWII as your proxies to defend today’s culture of normalized violence, is cowardice.

WWII was humanity’s apotheosis of normalized violence.

Those who died in it are dead. I daresay if you asked them, they’d have rather been alive.
I would wish the men who stormed the shores of Normandy were alive for many reasons.

Watching them react to @GadSaad as he implied their masculinity was intrinsically tied to abusing women would be low on the list.

But it would be on the list.
OK, so not you. But so what? Why would the ad offend you?

If not you, then the ad wasn't talking about you. If you’re not accused, why do you feel the accusation? If you haven’t offended why do you feel the offense?
“The problem with this world is everyone gets offended by every little thing,” I said, very rationally, dumping out all my razors made by the company that dared suggest men shouldn’t harm women.
And there it is.

I think we’ve discovered a few more things his dad taught him.
As I said, these outsized self-defensive reactions to generally-targeted simple statements of basic decency are the product of a guilty conscience.
