This point has been consistent throughout the talks. In public and in private. I remember being in Berlin in 2017, and it was as clear then, as it is now. 
As UK shitshow unfolded, maintaining unity among the 27 has been much harder than many realise. There have been differences of tone & views on an array of issues, but not on key principles & bigger picture. Whatever happens, the 27 are not going to abandon a hard fought unity now
