NEW: The EU thinks Theresa May's attempt to win the support of MPs for her Brexit deal has come too late and will probably not work now, EU27 ambassadors were told today buzzfeed.com/albertonardell…
EU27 ambassadors were asked to not speculate about A50 extension & extending A50 beyond a few months is not so simple because it would mean the UK participating in European elections.

Am told there are different views on acceptable duration of any potential extension.
Finally, EU will be intensifying its preparations for no deal. European Commission officials will soon be visiting capitals to meet with relevant ministers.

Malta will create a new post-Brexit status for UK nationals currently residing in the country, protecting their rights.

Post-Brexit, terms for Britons to live and work in the country will be similar to those of non-EU nationals
Malta is also increasing no-deal preparations, these include advising companies to, where possible, look for alternative medicinal product suppliers in the EU vs UK, stockpiling medicines as a back-up, and boosting customs preparedness
Finally, Malta joins other member states to reiterate once more that the withdrawal agreement should not be reopened

When UK leaves the EU, the Irish border becomes the EU’s external border. This is not only a bilateral Ireland-UK issue. It is an EU27 issue, also about protecting integrity of the single market (see Dec EUCO). Any solution needs to be compatible with EU law, and viable for EU27
Because of this, while an overall solution may well involve bilateral aspects, the need for any solution, if it is to be deemed credible, to address the purpose and substance of the backstop remains

Over the past 2 years, I have never met or heard a single senior EU or European government official indicating or even hinting that they would ever throw Ireland under the bus. Unity is paramount for the 27. The concerns and interests of one, are the concerns and interests of all
This point has been consistent throughout the talks. In public and in private. I remember being in Berlin in 2017, and it was as clear then, as it is now.
As UK shitshow unfolded, maintaining unity among the 27 has been much harder than many realise. There have been differences of tone & views on an array of issues, but not on key principles & bigger picture. Whatever happens, the 27 are not going to abandon a hard fought unity now

Services: 80% of UK economy (architecture, management consulting, legal, creative etc) & big services surplus UK runs with RoW & EU. So why does Govt want to damage economy in #Brexit plan being discussed by cabinet today (focusing on goods only?) ft.com/content/2ce78f… via @FT
And anyway services get bundled in today's global value chains for high-value high-tech goods (c. Aircraft engines & their maintenance) which is what UK government is supposed to be promoting via its (mysterious) industrial policy announced back in 2016.
If you wanted a better trade & industrial policy for UK (which is desirable to create high-paying jobs via higher productivity) you wouldn't put it together in the way that #Brexit is taking us (raising barriers to trading with UK's big EU markets).

1) Megathread - Yes, the #Brexit vote is illegitimate, and it's not elitist to say so

Simply put, a vote that is based on misconceptions and illusions but which *cannot* be reversed is an affront to democracy therefore the very concept of the referendum is illegitimate
2) So why was the #Brexit vote illegitimate? Well, broadly speaking:
1) The Brexit we "voted for" ends FoM, the ECJ & payments to EU
2) This will be severely damaging to the economy & jobs
3) If the public was asked today the same question but were told the above,Remain would win
3) Leave simply would not win if the costs of the #Brexit they promised were revealed honestly in a second referendum. The only way they could win is if these costs were obscured again

THREAD (1) When the likes of Hannan feel the need to 'brush off' something so critical to the right-wing/neo-con #Brexit wet dream, we find digging a little deeper to be useful. After all, ground breaking 'shadow trade deals' with right-wing US think tanks is no small fish.
(2) In fact, given the growing negativity surrounding the #Brexit negotiations, compounded by the Govts' own damning economic analysis, one would have thought Hannan and Fox et al, would be shouting from the roof tops about their bespoke 'shadow US-UK trade deal.' Wouldn't you?
(3) The problem for our intrepid trade deal making duo, as almost always, is to be found in the detail; just what are, and who is, behind these neo-con US think tanks? Perhaps Daniel would enlighten us?

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
