While @David_Gergen is one of the genuinely smart, genuinely sincere “good guys,” this simply isn’t true. Federal employment in career civil service is and remains one of the great job “gets” in America, especially for risk-averse employees. This aberration is just that.
And federal employees, past present and future, know this which is why it remains very hard to secure a gig inside an agency and why there will be very very few who don’t return to work post shutdown having sought greener pastures. The pay and benefit is excellent compared to
private sector parallel positions, and protections are without parallel anywhere. Spoken from the experience of @USOPM former Deputy Director and GC. I admire federal workforce, know it’s value, and know it will continue to attract exceptional candidates regardless of shutdown.
