Rand Paul is heading to the White House to tell Trump to "stay the course" on bringing troops home from Syria and to cut troops in Afghanistan in half, he tells me, dismissing Lindsey Graham push to get Trump to reconsider after ISIS attack.
Paul also wants the savings from an Afghanistan withdrawal to fund an infrastructure package in the USA, saying that's what Trump campaigned on.
Paul said they've been fighting in the Middle East for a thousand years and will probably fight for a thousand more, and if we wait for it to be perfectly safe we will never leave.
Paul also tells me he is pitching Trump on withdrawing from Syria and Afghanistan as good for his 2020 reelection. Paul said Trump has a very difficult path to win and independent voters think the wars have gone on too long...
Lindsey earlier today said Trump's words on Syria emboldened the enemy and urged him to reconsider his pullout...
