The DREAM Act giving immigrants brought here as children a path to citizenship is so old it will turn 18 this year.

Think about that.
18 years in limbo, always with talk of Congress doing something just around the corner.
The DREAM Act is so old original cosponsor Orrin Hatch was still in his 60s.

The iPod hadn’t been invented yet.

We had a budget surplus.

9/11 hadn’t happened yet.

DHS did not exist.

That’s how old this debate is.

Clear WH/Rs really, really want a Dem counteroffer with wall money. But Democrats have insisted Trump reopen government before negotiating so it's not a hostage situation.
One problem Democrats -- and Republicans -- have complained about all along: Trump's team has different camps & no one knows what Trump is going to do day to day. Who do you negotiate with? Can you trust them? Ds say offers have to come from Trump & they don't trust him either.

CBS poll: The partisan split on immigration is enormous.
Danger sign for Rs?
Trump massively upside down on the issue with independents and is losing 19% of Republicans too.
A problem for Trump: ~2/3rds of Republicans want him to keep the government shut down until he gets his wall. But ~2/3rds of voters want him to reopen the government without a wall.
A pickle.

1) Democrats are completely screwed on Immigration! The latest Harvard-Harris Poll has some devastating data.

Democrats- 37%
Republicans - 32%
Independents - 29%
Other- 2%
2) 63% of voters favor “a congressional deal that gives undocumented immigrants brought here by their parents work permits and a path to citizenship in exchange for increasing merit preference over preference for relatives, eliminating the diversity visa lottery, and
3) funding barrier security on the U.S.-Mexico border.” This includes 61% of Hispanics, 55% of African American voters, and 63% of Democrats.

THREAD: As a lawyer who worked for Obama on DACA issues, I’d like to explain what’s on Trump’s plate, how it got there, and what may happen.
2. DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) was created in 2012 to protect “Dreamers” – who came to US as kids but aren't here legally.
3. Essentially, DACA enables DHS to notify Dreamers formally – via a two-year permit – that they won’t be removed from the US.
