In the Sri-Vaishnava household I grew up in, teertham always meant "water" growing up :)

I wonder if it is unique to Sri-Vs, or common usage for water in other communities too
From what I have heard, I think Tamil Smarthas prefer Jalam over Teertham, though the younger generation across castes says "Thanni" even for drinking water

In the north, Paani is the norm, with Jal used rarely

Never heard of Teertham for drinking water except among my folks
In Kannada, the word is Neeru, which I grew up mistaking for a Dravidian word, but then came across a song in the movie Baiju Bawra where Neer is used to refer to the tears of a deity

Though I'm not sure if Neer is a Tatsama word in Kannada or a Dravidian loan word in Indo-Aryan
