Atheism isn't a club which you can join and try out by choice. People become atheists when the idea of "God" stop making sense.
It doesn't give any meaning to existence. On the contrary, it actually makes you realise that there is no "meaning" or purpose" to life.

This is essentially why atheists don't ask around people to join them. People of religion A might want to convert people of religion B, by force or otherwise, because theism is a commonality. This cannot happen with atheism.
Atheism is a realisation that has to happen to an individual by his/her own critical analysis of the world. There is no way someone can be converted to an atheist by force. For this reason, atheists don't go around propagating atheism.
Both theism and organised religion are steps in human's evolutionary process. Its fading away and the growth of agnosticism and atheism are subsequent steps of human evolution.
As Marx said, religion is the heart of a hearless world and opium for masses. An atheist simply realises that theism is a construct invented to console the world and make people believe in hopeful ideas so they feel better about their miseries.
Just leaving this here, since the last sentence about "meaning"/"purpose" seem to be open to interpretation.
