If there's any good that came out of the appalling incident with #CovingtonCatholic teens, it's that more of us know this man's name, Nathan Phillips, and his life-long positive impact.

He is deserving of our thanks & respect... not taunts & ridicule.

We all can learn from him.
With the additional videos circulating, showing how the incident started, it appears that Nathan Phillips stepped in and diffused what could have been a MUCH worse situation. This could have ended badly had he not.
Nathan's account: He put himself between Covington Catholic teens & the BHI protestors to diffuse a highly charged (potentially violent) situation.

The teens' parents owe this man a debt of gratitude. They didn't start it, but 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Note that throughout the video, the person capturing the footage repeatedly threatened violence.

As one who attended Catholic grade school all 6 years, I had the Bible and Jesus' words drilled into my brain. What the zealot "Christians" are espousing as religious values on people who are "different" than you - immigrants, LGBTQ, etc. - is a far departure from The Word.

As one who was in a bad car accident last year caused by a 90+ year old man who suddenly made a left turn into oncoming traffic, I know firsthand of the potential consequences.

With the transportation options available (Uber, Lyft, etc), is it worth the risk? /2

We stopped my dad from driving in his early 80's after numerous (thankfully) minor accidents he caused, but denied fault/deflected blame for. He was fiercely independent, but no longer reliable behind the wheel, and getting him to realize that was a struggle. #olderdrivers /3

Even watching the full, 2 hour video does not exonerate those boys. People who want them to be innocent point to it as: "They were provoked."
The student's mother came out with: "Those black muslims made those boys act that way." Here's where I call bull.

First of all, they weren't "black muslims," they were member of the Black Hebrew Israelites sect, a rather extremist group based in Black Judaism. As someone said: "If you're from the hood, you know to ignore them."

Ok, I just destroyed my brain by watching an hour plus video of the incident so I'm gonna lay down some play by play commentary on the whole #CovingtonCatholic thing and Nick's statement.
I've seen two longer videos of the incident. One seemed to be the POV/filmed by one of the students. I can't find that vid on Youtube anymore. The other, taken by the cameraman with the black preacher, can be viewed here:
(I've seen multiple names for the group with the preacher and don't know what name they actually go by. No insult meant by me not saying it, it's purely my own ignorance.)

Last night I learned & confirmed the name of the "main student" from the #CovingtonCatholic incident. The kid grinning in front of the Native elder.

Finding the #CovingtonCatholic student's identity was not easy.

He is not pictured in any of the school's many (many!) pics of student athletes on their website, apparently because he doesn't play sports.

But I sifted through a lot. Because I was so upset at that video.
I have reviewed the student's Facebook account, seen family photos, and even talked with another student who knows him.

The ID is 100% iron-clad.

I was watching this video waiting for a moment where the kids at #CovingtonCatholic did something truly outrageous, like getting into a physical altercation.

But there's none of that in this video. All I see is stupid kids WHO DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER, NOT KNOWING ANY BETTER.
But apparently, SOME SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKING IDIOTIC COMMENTS **TO THEMSELVES** is enough for the internet to attack them.

This young man who went to a nearby school details homophobic harassment by students after he came out — including saying his name was put on a “prayer board” inside the school and called out during announcements:

Two more things to add about #CovingtonCatholic:

1. It appears the boys currently attending the school received instruction to lock down their Twitter accounts after this all gained visibility.
2. It also appears there is a pattern of group harassment, sometimes targeting girls.
Covington Mayor speaks out:

“The videos...do NOT represent the core beliefs and values of this City...Covington is a diverse community, in areas of race, national origin, ethnicity, religious preference, sexual orientation, and income.”

Just finished Better Than You Know by @mjmauboussin. Definitely one of the best books I have read thus far on investing. FWIW, sharing my highlights.
(1) Perhaps the single greatest error in the investment business is a failure to distinguish between the knowledge of a company’s fundamentals and the expectations implied by the market price.
(2) I defined variant perception as holding a well-founded view that was meaningfully different from market consensus.... Understanding market expectation was at least as important as, and often different from, the fundamental knowledge.
