An uncomfortable topic in need of discussion: #olderdrivers (U.S., too) - for their safety as well as ours.

As one who was in a bad car accident last year caused by a 90+ year old man who suddenly made a left turn into oncoming traffic, I know firsthand of the potential consequences.

With the transportation options available (Uber, Lyft, etc), is it worth the risk? /2

We stopped my dad from driving in his early 80's after numerous (thankfully) minor accidents he caused, but denied fault/deflected blame for. He was fiercely independent, but no longer reliable behind the wheel, and getting him to realize that was a struggle. #olderdrivers /3
In my accident caused by an older driver, I was relatively "lucky." As I waited in pre-op for surgery to repair the resulting damage, a TV announced breaking news that morning: 2 teens killed in head-on crash caused by a 98 year old man driving an RV the wrong way. #olderdrivers
But we shouldn't be waiting until they have an accident (possibly injuring/killing themselves or others) before we have that difficult discussion - encouraging re-testing to insure they're still safe behind the wheel or, if need be, retiring them from driving. #olderdrivers /4

As one who attended Catholic grade school all 6 years, I had the Bible and Jesus' words drilled into my brain. What the zealot "Christians" are espousing as religious values on people who are "different" than you - immigrants, LGBTQ, etc. - is a far departure from The Word.

For Americans, a quick rough guide to what just happened with Brexit. First up, there was a referendum about leaving the E.U. which “leave” narrowly won. Article 50 was invoked, saying the UK had 2 years until it would be out of the E.U. permanently - that runs out in March. /1
Prime Minister May spent much of the last two years attempting to negotiate a deal for the withdrawal from the E.U., but over the last couple of years it has become increasingly clear that there is no consensus in Parliament as to what that deal should look like. /2
This is partly because the scale of the decision/its implications have become clear over time. Some in parliament have doubled down on leaving and wish no deal at all with the E.U. (falling back on World Trade Organisarkon standards) but this is generally thought to be bad. /3

Well, here is the 6 months later follow up on @Annals_Oncology paper by Haenssle et al, "Man against machine: diagnostic performance of a deep learning convolutional neural network for dermoscopic melanoma recognition in comparison to 58 dermatologists."

The paper claims "Most dermatologists were outperformed by the CNN", a bold statement. The relevant part of the paper is pictured.
I raised several concerns in those tweets:

1) they compared two different metrics (ROC-AUC vs ROC area) as if they were the same
2) they used average human performance
3) they seemed to cheat when picking an operating point for the model

Each biases in favour of the model.

Meanwhile, courts have further extended P Chidambaram's protection from arrest in one of the massive financial scams in which he is allegedly involved. Clearly, for him 'jail is not the safest place'.
It is a week since Abhijit Iyer-Mitra was arrested for satire. He is still in jail. In this wondrous democracy of ours, #FreeSpeech fetches jail. Criminals and offenders are extended bail or, even better, protection from arrest. We are all complicit in this travesty of justice.

Following the direct intervention of President Bashar al-Assad, the Russian force pulled out this morning and avoided any clash with #Hezbollah in the area.

hezbollah maantin and kept all positions. The #Russia/n move was not coordinated.+

#Hezbollah did not...I repeat, did not pull out one single element from the area.

I spoke to people on the ground: The Russian decision was unclear and considered unwelcome by the forces on the ground. Still, many elements of this move are unclear.

This is Hebron in the West Bank.
Hebron is the home of one of Islam's holy sites, the Ibrahimi Mosque.
It also happens to be a Jewish holy site named after Abraham as well.

This is called the Scientific Method. To test his hypothesis (which means millions of lives), research is required.
RESEARCH BIAS; Rubio has an A+ rating from the gun rights group for supporting NRA-friendly legislation. According to the New York Times, he has received $3.3 million from the group. (Research bias,performing the research influence the results to portray a certain outcome.)
