We're currently experiencing near-record levels of employment in the UK - but, while the majority of jobs added in recent years have been full-time ones, we've have also seen increases in the numbers of people in less-secure work - as the chart below show:
Other countries have experienced a similar shift in their labour markets, with a noticable increase in involuntary part-time work in most advanced economies over the last decade, particularly in Southern Europe:
Young people have also been among the most affected by the rise in insecure employment - particularly in Italy, Spain and Australia:
Different countries have responded to the challenge of supporting those on zero hour contracts in different ways. One potential response, for example, is to limit the use of zero hours contracts - while another is to make them more expensive for firms to use than fixed contracts.
